Sharpen the SawWelcome to Sharpen the Saw!
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People provides us a framework for achieving success from the inside-out. It involves habits that will help us grow from dependence to independence and from independence to interdependence. While all the habits are indeed very important, there is one habit that helps us achieve balance. It is Sharpen the Saw. Dr. Stephen R. Covey uses an analogy of a woodcutter who has been sawing for a long time, and as a result, has become less and less productive. Sawing dulls the blade, and the most logical solution is to periodically sharpen the saw. There is a difference between simply stopping from sawing and sharpening the saw. Taking a break is like putting down the saw and stopping. When you put down a dull saw for a while, the blade will still be dull when you pick it up again. Sharpen the Saw activities are actually purposeful and intentional activities that we commit to do to renew ourselves in any of the four dimensions. This is precisely why Habit 7 is called the habit of self-renewal. As Dr. Covey says, “By renewing the four dimensions of your nature—physical, spiritual, mental, and social/emotional, you can work more quickly and effortlessly. The things you do to sharpen the saw in any one dimension have a positive impact in the other dimensions, because they are so highly interrelated.” When we sharpen the saw regularly, we find ourselves able to achieve more balance in our work, in our relationships, and in our lives. This newsletter aims to help you sharpen the saw by providing relevant articles and themes. Topics could range from best practices of individuals and organizations to leadership and execution, web links to helpful videos and case studies, work-life balance, general reflection, family life, articles for the youth, fun and games, inspiring quotes, and a whole lot more. |
